Dust-free floor sanding | There is no such thing as dust-free floor sanding. Sanding timber or wood floors creates dust! The question which should be asked is, how effectively does your machinery and dust collection equipment collect the dust? Dust collection relies on filtration to separate dust from the air. The idea is to capture the dust while letting the filtered air back out into the room. Many floor sanding contractors do not realise or understand, that the fabric dust bags which collect the dust on a floor sanding machine are also filters. If the dust bags are not turned inside out and thoroughly shaken and or blown out to remove as much dust as possible, then the woven material the bags are made of, will not allow the air to pass through and ‘blow back’ will occur. Blow back is where, more of the air with dust mixed in it, will blow back under the machine and back out into the room. The entire dust collection system is therefore compromised, and your house will have far more dust than it would otherwise have left behind from the sanding process. The truth is, that even with ‘best practice’ methods of controlling dust, some dust will still escape. Best practice methods can minimise the dust but, not eliminate it. Custom Floor Sanding utilises ‘best practice’ methods to minimise dust escaping. |
Non-yellowing floor coatings, finishes or polish | The term ‘non-yellowing’ is also a myth or mistruth. The truth is, that UV light affects floor coating products – especially clear coatings. Solvent based polyurethane and oil-based varnish coatings are less stable than water-based when it comes to discolouring. Cheaper solvent and oil-based varnish coatings are very prone to turning the dreaded orange or brown tone that everyone seems to dislike. Water-based coatings on the other hand, tend to ‘bleach out’, for want of a better description. They seem to end up turning a pale shade or very light yellow, especially in direct sunlight. This is still a better outcome than the darker orange or brown tone the solvent or oil-based coatings end up being. The trend these days, is for more natural or neutral low sheen, clear coatings rather than the old shiny, thick, ‘Coke bottle glasses’ look of yesteryear. |
Floor coatings | Due to contemporary fashion and architectural design sense, hardwood floor coatings which preserve the natural colour and patina of the timber, are by far the most popular consideration for most people looking at having their timber or wood floors sanded and polished – or sanded and stained. There are popular water-based options now for ‘Invisible’ or ‘Raw’ look coating systems which, give hardwood and Cypress Pine timber floors a totally natural, uncoated or raw wood look. Water-based floor coatings are also considered non-toxic. Solvent polyurethane and oil-based varnish coatings are toxic. Solvent based polyurethane coatings contain isocyanates which, are carcinogenic. We avoid using those products. |
Staining | The truth about staining, is that is difficult to achieve very even or consistent colour density. This is due to the variation in colour and porosity of the timber or wood, from board to board and the different in sanding scratch patterns from the edges of the rooms when compared to the rest of the floor area. Therefore, more preparation is required and the process of applying the stain is arduous to say the least. Therefore, staining can be – or should be, more expensive if you expect to get a nice result. |
